Ghost of Yotei vs. Assassin's Creed Shadows: Directors Shrug Off Feudal Japan Face-Off – And Maybe They're Right?

The directors of *Ghost of Yotei* aren't bothered by comparisons to *Assassin's Creed Shadows*, seeing it as a sign of a vibrant gaming landscape – which is either Zen-master level chill or a brilliant PR move, but either way, we're intrigued. Both games offer a slice of feudal Japan, and hopefully, both will be distinct and awesome enough to warrant our attention (and coin).

Right, so everyone's flipping their origami cranes over the inevitable comparisons between Sucker Punch's upcoming *Ghost of Yotei* and Ubisoft's *Assassin's Creed Shadows*. Both are diving headfirst into feudal Japan, so naturally, the internet's buzzing louder than a swarm of angry hornets. But hold your katana, because the *Ghost of Yotei* directors aren't sweating it.

Nate Fox and Jason Connell, the co-creative wizards behind *Ghost of Yotei*, recently chatted with Game Informer about, well, precisely that. Were they bricking it that *AC Shadows* might steal their thunder? Nah. Connell reckons that seeing other games in the same ballpark is exciting, a sign that the gaming landscape is expanding. "I think it's just fun to see so many other cool games in this space," he said. Fair play, mate.

Now, *Ghost of Tsushima* was a bloody massive hit, selling over 13 million copies since its 2020 release. That kind of success builds expectations higher than Mount Fuji, so the sequel, *Ghost of Yotei*, has a lot to live up to. It's slated to drop on October 2, 2025, and it's set 300 years after the original, featuring a new protagonist called Atsu. Sounds promising, doesn't it?

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, on the other hand, already dropped earlier this year and, by most accounts, didn’t disappoint. It even snagged a respectable 81 on OpenCritic – just a smidge below *Ghost of Tsushima*'s 84. (Yes, we all know how much Metacritic scores *really* matter... wink, wink).

Of course, there are differences. *Ghost of Yotei* is heading to Hokkaido in Northern Japan in 1603, while *AC Shadows* chills in the central region in 1579. But let's be honest, it's still feudal Japan, complete with samurai, sneaky assassins, and probably a whole lotta cherry blossoms.

Sucker Punch has also promised to address some criticisms of the original *Ghost of Tsushima*, specifically the open-world design that some found a bit… repetitive. More “unique experiences” during exploration? Sounds good to me.

So, should we be worried about these two games stepping on each other’s toes? Maybe not. As Connell pointed out, Ubisoft makes "awesome games." Perhaps there's room for two awesome games about stabby people in old Japan. We shall see. And hey, if you're feeling particularly flush, you can even pre-order a *Ghost of Yotei* PS5 bundle. Fancy, that.
