Pokémon Go is hosting a Grookey Community Day on Jan. 18, featuring boosted shiny rates, the exclusive move Frenzy Plant for Rillaboom, and plenty of bonuses for raiders and collectors.
Pokémon Go is rolling out its latest Community Day event this Sunday, Jan. 18, putting the spotlight on the grass-type starter Grookey. Running from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time, the three-hour window offers players massively increased spawn rates and a roughly 1 in 24 chance to encounter a shiny Grookey. For players trying to maximize their time or save on Poké Balls, popping an Incense and quickly tapping spawns is the most efficient strategy, especially since checked Grookey will visibly face your player avatar to help you keep track.
Evolving Thwackey into Rillaboom between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time will net you the powerful charged move Frenzy Plant. While wild event Grookey cannot participate directly in Max Battles, the massive candy haul you get from the event makes it easy to power up existing Gigantamax or standard Rillaboom. According to guides by Polygon, Rillaboom serves as a reliable grass-type attacker for raids and gyms when paired with Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant, though it still falls short of meta powerhouses like Mega Sceptile and skips competitive PvP relevance entirely.
To make the most of the afternoon, make sure to drop a Star Piece and an Incense while utilizing matching Mega Evolutions like Venusaur, Sceptile, or Abomasnow to boost your candy yields. Niantic is also extending the lure bonus until 9 p.m., meaning Lure Modules will keep boosted shiny spawns flowing even after the main three-hour event window closes. Head over to Polygon for the full breakdown and strategy guide.
