Gears of War: E-Day Confirms Return of Horde and Versus Modes Ahead of October Launch

The Coalition confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will feature Horde Siege for 12 players and classic 4v4 Versus at launch, with an open beta scheduled for August.

Following the recent Xbox Games Showcase, developer The Coalition pulled back the curtain further with a dedicated deep dive into Gears of War: E-Day. While the showcase trailer heavily emphasized the co-op campaign and its gritty narrative prequel setting, the subsequent broadcast confirmed that franchise staples Horde and Versus are returning for the October 6 launch on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Even though the studio kept those segments brief during the presentation, the details shared give long-time fans plenty to look forward to.

The cooperative side is getting a significant mechanical shakeup with Horde Siege, which now scales up to support 12 players divided into three squads. These teams will battle the Locust across bespoke maps set in the city of Kalona. Meanwhile, competitive players will find comfort in the return of classic 4v4 Versus matches. These maps are specifically tailored to take advantage of new movement mechanics like sliding and jumping while retaining the symmetrical design that competitive Gears players expect.

Players will not have to wait until October to test these modes out. The Coalition confirmed an open beta scheduled for August, featuring both PvP and Horde content. While pre-ordering grants early access, the beta will eventually open up to everyone. As reported by Eurogamer, this hands-on period will give the community a vital chance to test the new traversal systems and settle the ongoing community debates over modern movement before the game officially drops.
