GameStop Officially Pulls the Plug on Pro Rewards Points

GameStop is phasing out the points system for its Pro Membership program, with new points stopping in July and remaining balances expiring in August, while the annual subscription fee stays at twenty five dollars.
The retail shift away from physical media continues to claim its history. According to a report by Kotaku, GameStop is officially ending the points system for its Pro Membership program. Starting July 15, new Pro members will no longer accrue rewards points. Anyone who renewed prior to that date must use their remaining balance before all existing points expire on August 15. The annual cost of the subscription remains twenty five dollars, meaning subscribers are now paying the same price for a heavily downgraded package that lost its Game Informer magazine bundle back in 2024.
This decision marks another major milestone in the slow dismantling of the traditional retail gaming experience. For years, the two percent back on qualifying purchases and extra trade in value gave dedicated players a practical way to offset the rising cost of new releases. As digital storefronts, cloud gaming, and subscription libraries dominate how modern players access games, brick and mortar strongholds are scrambling to find their footing. CEO Ryan Cohen has previously attempted to pivot the business model, even making an unsuccessful bid to acquire eBay, which highlights the company's search for a viable digital future.
For the player community, this change feels like a distinctly anti-consumer move during a time when household budgets are already stretched thin by ongoing gaming industry price hikes. Store employees are left to absorb the customer backlash while managing declining foot traffic. If you still have a stash of Pro points sitting on your account, your best move is to head into a local store and clear them out before the mid-August deadline. Otherwise, it might be time to evaluate whether keeping that annual subscription active is worth the cost.
