GameStop has offered $55.5 billion to acquire eBay in an ambitious bid led by CEO Ryan Cohen, aiming to use physical storefronts to create a major competitor to Amazon.
GameStop is making one of the most unexpected plays in corporate retail history. According to a report by Polygon, GameStop has made an unsolicited, non-binding offer to acquire e-commerce giant eBay for $55.5 billion, valuing the company at $125.00 per share. The proposal comes with a 20 percent premium over eBay's closing stock price, split evenly between cash and stock. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen outlined the vision in an open letter to eBay's Board of Directors, pointing out that GameStop already holds a five percent economic stake in the platform.
Cohen aims to build a legitimate competitor to Amazon by combining eBay's massive digital marketplace with GameStop's physical infrastructure. Under the proposed plan, GameStop's roughly 1,600 United States storefronts would act as a national network for item authentication, intake, fulfillment, and live commerce. Cohen has also stated he intends to lead the combined corporation as CEO, and he has warned that he is prepared to launch a proxy fight if eBay's board rejects the offer.
The massive multi-billion dollar bid catches many by surprise, especially considering eBay's estimated $46 billion market value dwarfs GameStop's own valuation of around $12 billion. Yet, Cohen has built his tenure on high-stakes gambles and radical corporate shifts since the viral meme stock era of 2021. For collectors, traders, and everyday digital marketplace users, this ambitious takeover attempt could fundamentally alter how physical media, retro games, and collectible card markets operate on a global scale.
