Games Workshop Pulls Indie Game Void War from Steam Over Shoulderpad Dispute

Games Workshop temporarily removed the indie strategy game Void War from Steam via a DMCA takedown over shoulderpad designs resembling Space Marine armor, prompting the developers to remove the disputed trailer to keep production moving.

Independent strategy game Void War recently found itself temporarily pulled from Steam following a Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notice issued by Games Workshop. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the developers at Tundra Interactive initially suspected the claim was a fraudulent automated report, especially since the notice listed the name Mal Reynolds, famously shared by Nathan Fillion's character in Firefly. Tundra later confirmed the notice was entirely legitimate after speaking directly with the Warhammer publisher.

The core dispute boiled down to the game's art direction, specifically a set of oversized convex shoulderpads featuring metallic rims shown in one of the promotional trailers. While Tundra maintains that all their artwork is completely original, they decided to pull the offending trailer to bypass lengthy legal battles and keep their development schedule on track. The team is currently prioritizing localization and finishing the game, leaving open the possibility of editing the disputed armor design for a future trailer upload.

This situation highlights the delicate balance indie developers must navigate when drawing heavy inspiration from established giants. Void War wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, playing much like a combination of FTL and the grimdark aesthetic of Warhammer 40,000. While large publishers will always aggressively protect their intellectual property, this case serves as another reminder of how quickly digital storefronts can restrict indie projects when legal teams step in.
