Game Freak Hints at Future Combat Evolution for Pokemon Winds and Waves

Game Freak suggests that upcoming tenth-generation games like Pokemon Winds and Waves may introduce changes to the classic combat system, thanks to the competitive hub Pokemon Champions preserving traditional battles.

The Pokemon franchise could be gearing up for a significant shift in how its battles play out. Speaking in a recent development video reported by GameRant, Pokemon Champions director Kazumasa Iwao explained that the existence of Pokemon Champions allows the team at Game Freak to slowly experiment with mainline combat systems. Because the free-to-play competitive hub preserves the classic turn-based mechanics fans have relied on for three decades, developers feel they have more breathing room to introduce gradual changes in upcoming entries like the tenth-generation duo, Pokemon Winds and Waves.

While the core formula has stayed remarkably consistent since 1996, the series has continuously layered on mechanical tweaks over the years, ranging from new elemental types and held items to Tera mechanics and the real-time elements seen in Legends titles. Iwao noted that abandoning the classic system entirely would alienate long-term players who have been battling since the Game Boy era. By sequestering the traditional format in a dedicated platform, Game Freak can target fresh innovations for future single-player adventures without throwing away thirty years of competitive history.

Set for a 2027 release, Pokemon Winds and Waves will arrive as generation ten titles, though concrete gameplay details remain scarce. It is still unclear whether major combat overhauls will debut in these upcoming games or roll out further down the line. As many legacy RPG franchises gradually move away from strict turn-based pacing, this dual approach gives the studio a practical safety net to modernize the gameplay loop while keeping long-time community expectations intact.
