Gabe Newell's Life: Scuba Diving, AI, and Apparently, No Sleep? (Is He Even Real?)

Valve's Gabe Newell apparently spends his days scuba diving and working on AI, claiming he's been retired and doing only what's fun for ages, leaving us all wondering what 'fun' means to a man who runs Steam.

Right, so Eurogamer just dropped a snippet of a rather… *unique* interview with the big cheese himself, Gabe Newell. Turns out, running Valve isn't all about counting money and silently judging our game libraries (though, let's be honest, it probably is a little). According to Newell, his daily grind goes something like this: wake up, work, SCUBA DIVE (yes, really), work some more, maybe another dive, gym, hang out on his boat (because *of course* he lives on a boat), and then… more work. I'm starting to suspect he's a highly advanced AI designed to perpetually optimize game distribution, fueled by saltwater and the tears of Half-Life fans.

Now, before you start picturing Gabe lounging on deck in a Hawaiian shirt sipping margaritas, he claims he's working "seven days a week" from his bedroom, which, fair play, sounds more like my average Tuesday than a tropical retirement. But here's the kicker: he says he's basically been retired for ages, doing only what's "fun and entertaining." So, apparently, that involves "AI stuff," "Steam stuff," and… wait for it… working on an "aerosol pathogen detection device." Bloody hell, talk about a diverse portfolio. I reckon that’s more exciting than working on Half-Life 3. (Maybe?)

He's also apparently deep into brain-computer interfaces, because, you know, why not? "Brain-computer interfaces are incredibly cool and all of the associated neuroscience is incredibly cool," says Gabe. I mean, he's not wrong. Imagine playing *Dota 2* with your *mind*. Though, thinking about the rage... maybe not.

And the best part? He claims he can't sleep because he's having *too much fun*. "I can't go to sleep because I'm having fun, you know?" he says. Fair dinkum, Gabe. Fair dinkum. While this does make me think of some mad scientist tucked away at Valve HQ, maybe this “fun” also translates into innovations and improvements within the industry. I reckon we'll see when the full interview eventually drops.

He also touched on AI's potential to democratize programming, suggesting that AI tools could empower non-programmers to create value, possibly even outpacing seasoned developers. It's a bold prediction, and one that could significantly reshape the gaming landscape (and plenty of other industries, to be fair). Imagine the modding scene if anyone could whip up new content with just a few prompts…

So, is Gabe Newell a scuba-diving, AI-obsessed, perpetually-working, possibly-immortal being? The evidence is mounting. And while the rest of us are stuck troubleshooting our PCs, he's probably out there communing with the fishes and plotting the future of gaming. Lucky bastard.
