FromSoftware Drops Emergency Patch After Elden Ring Players Duplicated New DLC Gear

FromSoftware released an emergency patch for Elden Ring to stop a duplication exploit that allowed players to share paid DLC items with users who hadn't bought the add-on.

Elden Ring is back in the spotlight following its recent arrival on the Switch 2, alongside a new multiplatform DLC drop that brought Nintendo edition extras to PC and console players. The five dollar Tarnished Pack introduced fresh starting classes, new armour sets, weapons, and custom skins for Torrent. Shortly after the launch, the community discovered a loophole that allowed players who purchased the add-on to drop the exclusive items into the worlds of friends who did not own it, duplicating the gear without losing a copy from their own inventories.

FromSoftware moved quickly to close the gap, rolling out patch 1.17.1 across all platforms specifically to plug the exploit. According to the official update notes, the patch fixes a multiplayer issue where DLC items could be obtained by ineligible users under specific conditions. While the duplication method is gone, standard item trading remains intact, meaning players can still swap weapons and armour as long as the items actually leave the original owner's inventory during the trade.

This rapid response highlights the delicate balance developers must maintain between community-driven item sharing and paid digital economies. While trading has always been a core part of the cooperative experience in Soulslike games, handing out paid content for free crosses a line that publishers watch very closely. As the Switch 2 port continues to bring new players into the fold, FromSoftware is clearly ensuring that its digital monetization remains secure across every platform.
