FromSoftware has confirmed that its upcoming Switch 2 multiplayer title, The Duskbloods, will use skill-based matchmaking and ranked systems to protect new players from veteran dominance.
FromSoftware is tackling one of multiplayer gaming's most persistent debates head-on. In a recent interview with IGN, studio director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed community concerns about The Duskbloods, confirming that the upcoming Switch 2 title will feature a ranked matchmaking system designed to separate newcomers from seasoned veterans. As an ambitious PvPvE experiment where eight Bloodsworn battle across shifting objectives, the game leaves plenty of room for early adopters to build massive advantages through map knowledge and optimal routing. By ensuring that high-skilled competitors primarily match with their peers, the studio hopes to prevent public lobbies from turning into hostile territory for players picking up the game months after launch.
At the same time, FromSoftware is designing progression to cushion the learning curve for newer players. Winning matches is not the only path to meaningful rewards, as participants can unlock story content and character customization simply by playing consistently. The game's Virtue system also reduces the absolute necessity of raw mechanical combat skill by offering alternative ways to advance through the match. This structure encourages players to engage with the world and learn the mechanics at their own pace before worrying about high-level competitive dominance.
Looking beyond launch, the development team is even exploring ways to make veteran players an asset to beginners rather than a threat. Concepts under consideration include adjusting rare event triggers or encouraging temporary alliances when high-ranking accounts share a lobby. While these cooperative social features are still tentative, they align with the unconventional multiplayer interactions that have always defined the studio's catalog. Finding the right balance between protecting casual queues and satisfying competitive grinders is never easy, but early transparency shows FromSoftware is building this ecosystem with long-term community health in mind.
