Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij has praised Larian Studios for choosing to walk away from the Baldur's Gate franchise instead of opting for a predictable sequel, calling it a bold and risky move in an industry that usually plays it safe.
Walking away from a runaway mega hit is rarely the obvious choice in modern game development. Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij recently commended Larian Studios for stepping away from the Dungeons and Dragons franchise after the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3. In an interview with Games Hub, reported by TheGamer, Vermeij pointed out that playing it safe and sticking to a proven formula is usually the default industry playbook. When a studio hits gold, the corporate and creative pressure to simply iterate on that exact formula can be overwhelming.
Vermeij knows this dynamic intimately from his years working on Grand Theft Auto titles like GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA 4 before leaving Rockstar North in 2009. He noted that it is always tempting to cram experimental ideas into an established flagship universe rather than taking the financial and creative risk of building something entirely new. By choosing to pivot to a fresh project rather than immediately locking into production on a sequel, Larian is bucking a deeply ingrained industry trend that prioritizes predictable sequels over uncharted creative risks.
Meanwhile, Larian continues to navigate its own complex public conversations as it prepares for an upcoming community AMA addressing its stance on generative AI. While studio CEO Swen Vincke previously faced community backlash after discussing the evaluation of new tools, he has clarified that their next Divinity project will not feature AI generated content. As Larian looks toward the future, the industry will be watching closely to see if abandoning a guaranteed franchise printer turns out to be the masterstroke it appears to be.
