Former Bethesda Developer Casts Serious Doubt on Any Future Starfield Sequel

A former Bethesda developer believes Starfield was not successful enough to warrant a sequel, leaving the future of the sci-fi franchise in doubt as the studio focuses on other projects.
When a major studio launches a massive new intellectual property, the expectation is usually an eventual sequel. According to former Bethesda lead systems designer Kurt Kuhlmann, that might not be the case for Starfield. In a recent interview with FRVR, Kuhlmann stated that the sci-fi roleplaying game simply was not successful enough to warrant a Starfield 2. While the studio is still pushing out updates and preparing new content for the game, its notoriously divisive player reception has left its long term future looking uncertain.
Kuhlmann acknowledged the immense ambition behind the project and noted that a sequel could have finally achieved the original vision that director Todd Howard had in mind by applying lessons learned from the launch. Despite ongoing community support, official roadmaps, and dedicated modders working to improve spaceship mechanics and exploration, the game ultimately struggled to match the massive cultural footprint of Bethesda mainstays like The Elder Scrolls or Fallout.
For players invested in the Settled Systems, Bethesda is still committed to expanding the game with targeted updates and new stories as it enters its third year of support. Even so, the studio's primary focus remains firmly fixed on the development of The Elder Scrolls 6 alongside external projects like the upcoming Fallout game from Obsidian. If a sequel was ever secretly on the table, it would likely be many years away, leaving the current universe as a standalone experiment for the foreseeable future.
