Final Fantasy Resonance Brings Brave Exvius Into the HD-2D Era This October

Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Resonance, an HD-2D turn-based RPG launching on October 22 for consoles and PC that adapts the story of the mobile game Brave Exvius with classic exploration and guest characters from across the franchise.

Square Enix surprised players at the recent Nintendo Direct by announcing Final Fantasy Resonance, a brand new HD-2D turn-based RPG scheduled to launch on October 22 for PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo platforms. According to a report by Michael Higham on IGN South Africa, the game serves as a complete reimagining of the first season of the now-closed mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Rather than a simple port, Square Enix has built an entirely new overworld, classic airships, and a traditional turn-based combat system that drops the classic active time battle setup in favor of strict turn orders.

The game centers around the original Brave Exvius narrative, following knight Rain, his close ally Lasswell, engineer Lid, and the amnesiac summoner Fina as they journey across multiple continents to protect the realm's magic crystals. Exploration brings back series staples like chocobos and optional dungeons where players can unlock powerful Espers. Progression is tied to an equipable system called Visions, allowing players to attach collectible characters to party members much like a traditional Job system. Alongside returning tracks from the mobile game, Resonance features 33 brand new compositions.

For longtime fans, the biggest draw of the Vision mechanic is the inclusion of legendary guest characters from across the franchise history. Confirmed guest Visions so far include the Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy I, Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, Shantotto from Final Fantasy XI, and Y'shtola from Final Fantasy XIV. It is a smart pivot for a mobile narrative that many players missed, converting a live service story into a definitive single-player experience just in time for the fall release window.
