Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Secures a Physical Release, But Storage Demands Force a Compromise

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will feature a physical disc containing the game's opening segment, but players must download the rest due to the massive 200GB file size. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi pushed for a fully physical release, but data limitations on current-gen consoles forced a compromise.

The ongoing debate over physical preservation versus modern file sizes continues to hit players hard. Game Rant recently reported that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi fought for a complete, out-of-the-box physical release for the upcoming open-world RPG, but ultimately had to settle for a hybrid approach due to massive data requirements and publishing negotiations.

Set to launch on April 8 across current-gen platforms, the climactic finale of the remake series demands at least 200GB of storage space. Because standard Blu-ray discs cap out at 100GB on PlayStation 5 and 50GB on Xbox Series X, a fully physical version would have required multiple discs just to contain the base game. To avoid ballooning production costs and multi-disc packaging hurdles, Square Enix opted to include only the opening segment on the physical disc, requiring players to download the rest.

While PC players have spent years adjusting to digital-only libraries, console communities continue to push back against partial physical releases that rely heavily on digital infrastructure. Hamaguchi noted that he understands player frustrations surrounding the decision, pointing out that forcing a traditional format would have either compromised the game's fidelity or required extensive technical cutbacks. As digital ownership becomes the industry standard, physical media collectors are once again left navigating the messy reality of modern game sizes.
