Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the game will require a partial physical release due to an estimated 200GB file size. The title launches on April 8, 2027, across multiple platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
Square Enix is pushing technical boundaries with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, but that ambition comes with a massive storage cost. In an interview with VGC, series director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the upcoming game is expected to reach a staggering 200GB file size. Polygon got hands-on time with a demo at Gamescom, confirming that the scale easily surpasses its predecessor by including every location from Rebirth and expanding outward into entirely new territory.
Because standard current-generation console discs max out at around 100GB, fitting the entire game onto physical media is mathematically impossible without multiple discs. As a result, Square Enix confirmed that physical editions will ship with a single disc containing partial data, requiring players to download the remaining assets before jumping in. Hamaguchi acknowledged that collectors might feel frustrated by the compromised physical release, explaining that the decision was made to keep physical media alive in an increasingly all-digital landscape.
While having to download a massive portion of the game defeats some of the traditional convenience of buying physical copies, there is a silver lining for players. Requiring an initial download means that day-one fixes and crucial stability patches will already be integrated into the installation process, letting players experience the game in its optimal state right out of the gate. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
As the industry drifts further away from traditional disc-based ownership, compromises like this are becoming standard across major AAA releases. For players deeply invested in digital economies, cloud updates, and modern storage management, downloading half of a massive RPG is just part of the modern ecosystem. Even so, the ongoing friction between preserving physical media and accommodating ballooning file sizes remains a hot button issue for the community as we move deeper into the current generation.
