Final Fantasy 14 Looks to World of Warcraft for Housing Inspiration in Upcoming Evercold Expansion

Square Enix announced at Berlin FanFest that the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 Evercold expansion will feature housing updates inspired by World of Warcraft, alongside a new Tank Job and a massive FF7 Remake crossover.

The long-standing rivalry between two massive MMO giants is sparking some interesting design inspiration. During the recent Berlin FanFest keynote, producer and director Naoki Yoshida revealed that Final Fantasy 14 is borrowing a couple of key housing updates directly from World of Warcraft for its upcoming Evercold expansion. As Square Enix gears up for the January 2027 launch across current-gen platforms, the development team is clearly looking at competitor features to smooth out some of the game's historically rigid housing pain points for the community.

Alongside the housing overhaul, the Berlin event brought plenty of other heavy-hitting announcements for players to process. The team introduced the Bastion, which is the fifth Tank Job joining the roster in Evercold. This new class relies on a unique pair of gun-shields called Skyltborg to soak damage and counter incoming attacks, adding a fresh dynamic to dungeon and raid metas. Content creators and theorycrafters are already dissecting how this will shake up party compositions.

Fans of the broader franchise also have a massive collaboration to look forward to before the expansion drops. Square Enix unveiled a multi-stage crossover with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, kicking off this fall with fresh activities in the Manderville Gold Saucer. The collaboration will eventually build toward an eight-player raid series titled Beyond the Lifestream when Evercold officially arrives.
