Square Enix is ending the free grace period for Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing standard monthly subscription fees to the platform starting next week.
As reported by Polygon, the month-long introductory grace period for Final Fantasy 14 on the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially coming to a close. Starting next week, players diving into the critically acclaimed MMO on Nintendo hardware will need to maintain an active subscription. While the technical port runs surprisingly well and offers a great portable experience, navigating the payment structure requires a few extra steps for the community.
Players bringing their existing characters over from PC, PlayStation, or Xbox will receive a 50 percent discount on their Switch 2 subscription fee, though the game still requires a separate platform license. To soften the blow, Square Enix has ensured that players will not need a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the servers. However, the purchasing process is uniquely convoluted, requiring players to buy FFXIV Coins through the Nintendo eShop before converting them on the Mog Station for subscription fees and optional store items.
For veterans and newcomers alike, the transition marks a return to standard MMO economics on the platform. Fortunately, players who have never purchased the game can still access the massive free trial version without a subscription. For everyone else, managing automatic renewals will mean keeping a close eye on your virtual currency balance to avoid any sudden interruptions to your raid schedule.
