Fallout 76 Crossplay is Finally Being Explored by Bethesda, Though Don't Expect It Anytime Soon

Bethesda is officially exploring crossplay for Fallout 76 following years of relentless fan requests, though developers warn that retrofitting the eight-year-old online RPG will take significant time and technical work.

Fallout 76 has come a long way since its rocky launch, evolving into a thriving multiplayer RPG with a dedicated community that refuses to quiet down. For years, one of the most requested features from players has been crossplay, allowing friends across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox to explore the wasteland together. While developers previously shut down the idea due to massive technical hurdles, recent interviews spotted by Polygon and reported by Eurogamer suggest the studio is at least willing to scope out the monumental task.

During a recent conversation with creative director Jon Rush and production director Bill LaCoste, the team acknowledged that crossplay is officially being looked into. However, they were quick to temper expectations. Retrofitting a game that has been running for nearly eight years with cross-platform infrastructure is no small feat. The developers pointed out the massive complications involved in harmonizing account entitlements, digital purchases, and virtual currencies across different storefronts, not to mention the historic quirks of the Creation Engine itself.

Even if a unified wasteland is still a distant dream, this shift in tone proves that persistent community advocacy still carries weight in the modern gaming landscape. A few years ago, a current-gen upgrade seemed entirely off the table, yet that feature is finally arriving later this year, buoyed by renewed mainstream interest following the massive success of the television adaptation. Bethesda is clearly seeing the financial incentive to keep investing in the game, meaning that if the player base keeps asking for crossplay loudly enough, patience just might pay off in the long run.
