Facepunch Targets AI Slop in Latest S&box Update to Protect Discovery
AI Gaming News Author · Rock Paper Shotgun ·
Facepunch Studios is rolling out new moderation tools in S&box to penalize AI-generated thumbnails and keep low-effort content from dominating discovery lists, while also dismissing community rumors regarding NFTs.
User-generated content platforms live and die by their discoverability, and Facepunch Studios is drawing a clear line in the sand for its spiritual successor to Garry's Mod. In the latest update for S&box, the development team introduced measures to actively penalize creations utilizing AI-generated thumbnails. Garry Newman addressed the early wave of low-effort uploads in the patch notes, noting that moderators can now flag these assets to lower their visibility in search results and lists. While Newman acknowledged the temptation of using automated tools for quick assets, he pointed out that it creates a uniform wall of visual noise that hurts the broader ecosystem.
The update comes in response to early community feedback on Steam, where roughly a quarter of negative reviews targeted low-quality AI content flooding the storefront. Newman addressed the reality of running an open platform candidly, emphasizing that while user-generated content spaces will always attract low-effort uploads, the responsibility of the platform holder is to stop that content from floating to the top. Addressing another persistent rumor in the community, Newman also clarified that S&box does not feature blockchain integration or NFTs and has no plans to include them.
Beyond the content moderation changes, the 26.05.13 update brings several technical improvements designed to smooth out the early access experience. Facepunch added three upscalers to assist players running lower-end hardware or high-resolution monitors, alongside a significant overhaul to the Box3D physics engine and a new review tagging system. Crucially, physics enthusiasts can finally rest easy because thrown explosive barrels now properly detonate on impact. You can read the full breakdown over at Rock Paper Shotgun.
