Exodus Romance Options Will Feel Familiar to Mass Effect Fans, Developers Confirm

Exodus developers have confirmed that the RPG's romance options will resemble MassEffect rather than Baldur's Gate 3, featuring tasteful scenes and an active pursuit system, though an octopus companion is strictly off-limits.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus, players are naturally curious about how the game handles companion relationships. Speaking with IGN, game director Chris King and narrative director Drew Karpyshyn shed light on the romance mechanics. While the game features several romanceable characters available regardless of gender, the developers confirmed that you cannot romance Salt, an Awakened octopus companion who pilots a combat mech. Karpyshyn joked that Salt simply finds humans weird because we only have four limbs.
When it comes to the intimate moments themselves, the team is aiming for a mature tone that stops short of full explicitness. Karpyshyn described the romance scenes as very tastefully done, placing them in the appropriate middle of the modern gaming spectrum. Rather than matching the unfiltered nudity of Cyberpunk 2077 or Baldur's Gate 3, Exodus leans closer to the reserved, cinematic style found in the original Mass Effect trilogy.
Players will need to actively pursue these relationships rather than stumbling into them, and your choices can even trigger friction among your crew. With companions like the blunt Sleeper Elise Charroux and the dangerous operative Suliman offering plenty of intrigue, managing your social circle will be just as complex as surviving the battlefield. Exodus is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S on April 7, 2027.
