Ex-Rockstar Developer Working on New Horror Game Blending Bloodborne and Resident Evil

An indie survival horror game from a former Rockstar developer combines the fast-paced combat of Bloodborne with the atmospheric dread of Resident Evil.

A new third-party survival horror title called Black Tides Draga's Wake is turning heads by channeling the best elements of Bloodborne and Resident Evil. Developed by indie studio Strange Creature Factory, the project is led by Gregory Strangis, a former character artist at Rockstar and Naughty Dog who has also collaborated with film director Guillermo del Toro. Early gameplay trailers showcase an atmospheric alternate history set in the early 1900s, complete with terrifying doomsday cults, grotesque monsters, and an infection mechanic that lets the protagonist absorb bodies for power.

The combat footage released so far highlights a brutal, fast-paced flow that moves seamlessly from long-range firearm use into up-close melee executions, immediately drawing comparisons to FromSoftware's gothic classic. Meanwhile, the unsettling creature designs and eerie cultists evoke strong memories of Resident Evil 4. The protagonist Draga also bears a mutating arm that doubles as a deadly blade, introducing body horror mechanics reminiscent of classic action titles like Prototype.

While the project is still in the early stages of development and currently seeking a publisher, the team is targeting a 2029 release window. Reporting by GameRant notes that the studio is taking its time to build a polished, AAA-grade experience rather than rushing out an unfinished product. Fans looking to follow the game's progress can already find it listed on Steam for wishlisting as development continues.
