Pop superstar The Weeknd recently revealed via social media that he fumbled the romance route for Tae Takemi in Persona 5 Royal, proving that even global icons aren't immune to classic JRPG calendar mistakes.
Experiencing heartbreak over a virtual character is a canonical gaming milestone, and it turns out that fame and fortune do not exempt you from the pain. Pop superstar Abel Tesfaye, widely known as The Weeknd, has been sharing his gaming adventures in Persona 5 Royal through his alternate Instagram account, Gene.hackerman. After clocking in over 90 hours with Atlus's massive RPG, Tesfaye revealed a relatable tragedy to his followers. Despite his clear infatuation with the game's fan-favorite goth doctor Tae Takemi, the singer missed his window and completely fumbled the romance route.
Tesfaye is no casual player, of course. His recent gaming credentials include visiting Sega's offices in Japan, beating Nier: Automata, and building a friendship with series creator Yoko Taro. Yet, even a global music icon faces the same calendar management panic that catches every player off guard during Persona 5's intense life-sim segments. After realizing he could not seal the deal with Takemi, Tesfaye shared a dramatic screenshot depicting the game's iconic evoker mechanic, sending his fanbase into a spiral of laughter and sympathy on social media.
Community reactions have ranged from hilarious commiseration to playful jokes about what might inspire his next album. Players everywhere know the specific sting of locking yourself out of a social link in a hundred-hour RPG, and watching a celebrity experience that exact digital heartbreak is pure gold. As originally reported by Polygon, this high-profile slip-up has even caught the attention of the game's developers. Whether Tesfaye manages to pivot to another romance or just powers through New Game Plus, he has officially joined the ranks of everyday gamers living out the highs and lows of digital storytelling.
