Escaping the Shadow of Warframe: How Digital Extremes is Shaping Soulframe

Digital Extremes discusses how Soulframe aims to break away from Warframe's fast-paced action by embracing slower, skill-based melee combat and a more hopeful fantasy setting.

Digital Extremes is carving out a distinct identity for Soulframe, aiming to step away from the hyper-speed chaos of its long-running sci-fi hit Warframe. Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun, design director Scott McGregor explained that the team wanted to build a more hopeful, grounded universe in response to a bleak real-world climate. Instead of screen-clearing area-of-effect abilities and frantic parkour systems, Soulframe leans into methodical melee combat and deliberate pacing. The developers are taking mechanical inspiration from games like Elden Ring, ensuring that player skill and precise timing matter just as much as gear scores and numerical progression.

The game is currently living in its rolling early access phase, labeled as preludes, allowing the studio to test mechanics and iterate based on community feedback. Recent updates have introduced randomized weapon drops alongside deeper crafting loops, attempting to balance accessibility with long-term progression. Studio president Sheldon Carter noted that while live service development always feels like laying tracks while driving the train, the team is applying hard-earned lessons from over a decade of running Warframe. Crucially, the studio is aiming for larger, more ambitious updates right out of the gate rather than the small, iterative patches that defined Warframe's early years.

Monetization follows a familiar free-to-play framework where players can grind for items or purchase progression shortcuts, making player respect and time investment a central balancing act. While community reception to recent economy tweaks has been mixed on the forums, Digital Extremes believes its long-standing goodwill will give them room to experiment. Carter points out that Soulframe is already attracting a distinct audience separate from the traditional Warframe player base, proving that the studio's stylistic departure is finding its target market across the community.
