Epic Games Store leadership admits the launcher's current sluggish performance and lack of social features need serious work. Major updates arriving this summer promise significantly faster load times, player profiles, cross-platform chat, and new community spaces.
For years, opening the Epic Games Store has meant dealing with a sluggish launcher that felt more like a chore than a digital storefront. Even leadership is willing to admit the current state of the application. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Epic Games Store vice president and general manager Steven Allison candidly acknowledged the performance issues, noting that past resources heavily prioritized developer tooling over the end user experience. That focus is finally shifting toward what players have been asking for since the store launched.
Major architectural overhauls are already underway, with noticeable speed improvements slated to roll out around May or June. Beyond a snappier launcher, the platform is finally addressing its glaring lack of social infrastructure. Epic plans to introduce community spaces featuring customizable avatars, player profiles, cross-platform text chat, and voice chat. A forum style experience is also on the testing docket for later in the year, which should finally bring some community hub functionality to a platform that has long lagged behind competitors like Steam in social features.
For cross-platform players and digital collectors who primarily use the launcher to claim weekly free games or pick up exclusives, these upgrades are long overdue. A digital storefront needs to function smoothly as a social and entertainment hub, especially for modern players who treat gaming spaces as primary hangouts. If Epic delivers on these summer updates, the launcher might finally shed its stubborn reputation and become a place players actually want to linger.
