Epic Games Brings AI Voices to 36 Fortnite Characters Via UEFN

Epic Games is integrating AI-powered voices from Google Gemini for 36 Fortnite characters within the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, allowing creators to build dynamic NPCs as the conversation system leaves its experimental phase.

Epic Games is rolling out AI-powered voices for 36 recognizable Fortnite characters, including Agent Jones and The Imagined. According to reporting by Aimee Hart at Polygon, these new voice models are built using Google Gemini and are designed specifically for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Creators will soon be able to use these voices to build dynamic, interactive characters on their own custom islands. Epic states that the underlying voice performances were captured from independent professional actors who agreed to have their work used for AI model development. The studio also plans to discuss future opportunities with the original voice actors who worked on Fortnite Battle Royale.

This update coincides with the official transition of Fortnite's conversation system out of its experimental phase. Starting July 30, creators can publish custom islands featuring large language model-powered NPCs that can hold conversations, remember session events, and trigger in-game actions. While this opens up massive creative potential for community map makers, the wider industry implications are complicated. Critics and performers continue to raise concerns over the displacement of human talent in gaming, especially as massive publishers like Epic normalize generative voice technology.

For players, this means custom community maps are about to get a lot more immersive and unpredictable. At the same time, the feature brings back familiar concerns regarding automated systems. Previous attempts at AI integration in Fortnite lobbies led players to quickly bypass safety guardrails to generate inappropriate dialogue. As user-generated content continues to drive the platform's long-term success, balancing creative freedom with fair labor practices and content moderation remains a central challenge for developers and players alike.
