Ember and Blade: Roguelike Hack-and-Slash Goodness That Looks Like Hades Had a Baby With Path of Exile

IGN South Africa dropped a 22-minute gameplay trailer for *Ember and Blade*, a roguelike action RPG that looks like a glorious hybrid of *Hades* and *Path of Exile*, promising deep crafting and build customization. Early days of course, but this looks promising!
Right, so IGN South Africa just dropped a hefty 22-minute gameplay trailer for *Ember and Blade*, and fair dinkum, it's caught my eye. (Link at the bottom, by the way.) Now, I know what you're thinking: "Another roguelike?" But stick with me, mate, because this one looks like it's got something special going on.
Visually, it's hitting that sweet spot between the vibrant art style of *Hades* and the gritty, isometric perspective of *Path of Exile*. Imagine *Hades* but if Zagreus decided to get really, really into crafting and skill trees. The combat looks fast and fluid, with a real emphasis on tactical positioning and exploiting enemy weaknesses. We're talking dodges, parries, and a whole heap of special abilities that scream "customizable character builds!"
From the trailer, we can see a crafting system that appears surprisingly deep. The narrator mentions being able to forge your own weapons and armor, which suggests a serious time sink for us loot goblin types. And then there's the skill tree – oh, the skill tree! It’s branching out in a way that hints at a ton of replayability, and I'm already itching to try out different combinations and builds. What happens if I pump everything into fire damage? Or become an unkillable tank? The possibilities, they are endless. Maybe too endless? We shall see.
Now, I'm always a bit skeptical when I see "roguelike" attached to a game these days. It's become a bit of a buzzword, hasn't it? But *Ember and Blade* seems to genuinely embrace the permadeath and procedural generation aspects of the genre. The trailer shows off different environments, enemy types, and boss encounters, and none of it looks randomly slapped together. (Though, let's be honest, sometimes the best roguelikes are the ones that embrace the chaos, eh?).
Whether or not it lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but based on this gameplay reveal, *Ember and Blade* is definitely one to watch for fans of action RPGs and roguelikes alike. It’s got that addictive loop of combat, progression, and exploration that keeps you coming back for "just one more run," even when you know you're probably going to die horribly.
I’ll be keeping my eye on this one – and will let you know what I reckon after I have had a proper play.
