Elder Scrolls Online Confirms New Zones Are Still Coming Under the Season Model

ZeniMax Online Studios has confirmed that Elder Scrolls Online will continue adding new zones under its new quarterly Season model, while folding major classic expansions into the base game to give developers more creative freedom.

The Elder Scrolls Online is shifting gears in 2026, moving away from massive expansion-sized chapters every year and a half in favor of leaner, quarterly Season updates. As reported by Julian Benson at Rock Paper Shotgun, this shift initially sparked worry among players who feared that the MMO would stop adding entirely new zones to Tamriel. However, game director Nick Giacomini has stepped in to clarify that new zones are still on the way, though the team is rethinking how they are designed. Instead of sticking strictly to the traditional format, developers are looking at fundamental changes to deliver a different flavor that aligns better with modern player expectations.

Along with this restructuring, ZeniMax Online Studios is making major adjustments to how players access older content. Classic add-on areas like Orsinium, the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood, the Imperial City, and Western Skyrim are being folded directly into the base game. Executive producer Susan Kath and Giacomini explained that removing these paywalls gives the design team a much broader canvas. Quests can now seamlessly span multiple regions without developers having to worry about ownership fragmenting the player base, opening up fresh storytelling opportunities across both legacy and new areas.

This structural pivot also brings in the Tamriel Tomes battle pass system, a change that the development team acknowledges needs more hands-on clarity. With upcoming live streams, AMAs, and deep-dive posts planned for the coming months, ZeniMax aims to show rather than just tell how these systems will function. For a community that treats MMOs as long-term social spaces, streamlining access to older regions and keeping a steady cadence of fresh content makes the game much more inviting for both veterans and newcomers jumping in across platforms.
