Dwayne Johnson Embraces the Internet's Best Moana Wig Memes
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Dwayne Johnson is laughing off the viral wave of memes targeting his voluminous wig for the upcoming live-action Moana remake, taking the internet's creative roasts in stride.
The internet remains undefeated when it comes to roasting blockbuster casting choices. Following the drop of the live-action Moana trailer, social media feeds quickly flooded with jokes about Dwayne The Rock Johnson and his voluminous, gravity-defying hairpiece as the demigod Maui. Memes ranged from quips about the wig fighting its own contract obligations to parody legend Weird Al Yankovic tossing his own hat into the ring. Rather than firing back or hiding from the online chatter, Johnson recently told Variety that the jokes made him laugh immensely. As a notoriously bald actor stepping into a role defined by long, flowing locks, Johnson noted that a heavy-duty wig was the only practical route compared to heavy CGI.
While playing iconic characters often requires stepping out of the comfort zone and into questionable hair extensions, Johnson is no stranger to the internet treatment. Fans with long memories might recall his wild, unkempt mane in 2001's The Mummy Returns as the Scorpion King, or his hairpiece work in more dramatic fare like The Smashing Machine. Hollywood hair and makeup departments have been testing gravity for decades, but modern streaming culture amplifies every stray strand into viral gold within minutes. Johnson is rolling with the punches, asking audiences to wait and see the film before making final judgments on Maui's signature superpower.
For the modern gaming and entertainment crowd, these viral moments are just part of the standard rollout cycle. When major studios drop trailers, the community response is immediate, decentralized, and often funnier than the source material. Studios are learning to lean into the chaos rather than fighting the algorithm, and Johnson taking the jokes in stride is a masterclass in modern PR.
