Wizards of the Coast is bringing back Queen Ehlissa's Marvelous Nightingale in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons book Arcana Unleashed, reviving a classic Gary Gygax artifact after a 26-year absence.
As reported by Polygon, Wizards of the Coast is digging deep into tabletop history for its upcoming sourcebook, Arcana Unleashed. Set to release on September 15, 2026, the new book will officially reintroduce Queen Ehlissa's Marvelous Nightingale to the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons. First appearing in 1976 within the classic Eldritch Wizardry supplement co-written by Gary Gygax, this lethal mechanical songbird has been missing from official rulebooks for 26 years.
Originally designed as a high-tier magic item wrapped in dark lore, the new iteration of the Nightingale packs an incredible amount of utility for modern adventuring parties. When wound up, the golden bird projects a fifteen-foot aura that forces nearby entities to tell the truth. It also features six rechargeable charges that allow players to cast heavy-hitting spells like Prismatic Spray and Delayed Blast Fireball as a bonus action, giving tables a massive mix of crowd control and offensive firepower.
While classic versions of the artifact came with brutal psychological curses that could drain player stats or even take over a character's body, the Arcana Unleashed version dials back the active dangers. The lore surrounding its origins remains wonderfully ambiguous, leaving room for Dungeon Masters to frame it as a heartfelt memorial, a tyrannical weapon, or a prison for an otherworldly entity. Players looking to test out this piece of gaming history will finally get their chance when the new book arrives next month.
