Dungeons & Dragons Explores Baldur's Gate 3 Mind Flayer Transformations in New Playtest

Wizards of the Coast released a new Dungeons & Dragons playtest that lets tabletop players slowly transform into mind flayers, drawing clear mechanical inspiration from Baldur's Gate 3.

Wizards of the Coast is bringing one of video gaming's most memorable body horror dilemmas straight to the tabletop. According to a recent report by Polygon, the latest Unearthed Arcana playtest introduces Underdark options for Dungeons & Dragons, highlighted by the Path of Ceremorphosis. This new feature allows player characters to gradually transform into a mind flayer, taking direct inspiration from the tadpole infection mechanic that drives the narrative of Baldur's Gate 3.

The experimental system starts at level four with a symbiotic parasite before opening up paths for psionic abilities and physical mutations. As players level up, they can acquire feats that grant mind control spells, defensive shields, and face tentacles that function as unarmed strikes. Reaching level 12 unlocks full ceremorphosis, converting the character type into an aberration while offering specialized builds focused on psionic spellcasting or brain-eating combat.

Because this is an Unearthed Arcana release, the mechanics are currently live for public playtesting and community feedback before publishers decide how to package them for a future sourcebook. For players who love building mechanically distinct characters with heavy roleplay baggage, this crossover offers a fascinating way to bridge the gap between digital RPGs and traditional tabletop sessions.
