Dune: Awakening Heads to Consoles This September, But Skips Full Crossplay Support

Dune: Awakening is launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 22 alongside a new single-player mode, but Funcom has confirmed the game will not support full crossplay across platforms.
Funcom brought major updates for Dune: Awakening during the recent Sony State of Play showcase, confirming that the survival MMO finally arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 22. Console players are getting a version that includes every PC update released so far, putting everyone on the same content level. Alongside the console launch, Funcom is introducing a highly requested single player mode across all platforms, letting players experience the world entirely on their own terms without mandatory multiplayer interactions. While single player characters remain locked to their own instances, this offline-friendly path features persistent building and a simulated Landsraad system to keep the universe feeling alive.
Despite the excitement of expanding to new platforms, the community response has been tempered by a major limitation regarding online connectivity. According to an official blog post detailed by Eurogamer, Dune: Awakening will not feature crossplay between different console platforms, nor between PC and consoles, with the sole exception of crossplay between Xbox and the Windows PC Store. Fans on community spaces like Reddit have expressed immediate frustration over the restriction, especially players hoping to squad up with friends across different ecosystems. This technical hurdle echoes Funcom's previous survival hit, Conan Exiles, which largely avoided crossplay implementation as well.
The September 22 milestone also marks the conclusion of the game's first major story arc, giving incoming console players a complete narrative foundation right out of the gate. Dune: Awakening captured massive attention at launch, though it experienced the typical retention dip common in the genre before Funcom rolled out adjustments to soften the aggressive PvP endgame. Whether the console expansion and the addition of a dedicated single-player sandbox can successfully breathe new life into the player base remains to be seen, but the September update gives both newcomers and returning veterans plenty of fresh reasons to step back onto Arrakis.
