Capcom discusses the upcoming Dark Arisen DLC for Dragon's Dogma 2, addressing past microtransactions, performance patches, and the challenge of balancing fast travel with the game's hardcore identity.
Capcom is working hard to rebuild player trust following a rocky launch for Dragon's Dogma 2, according to producer Naoto Oyama and director Kenta Kinoshita. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the development team reflected on the criticisms that overshadowed the game's unique systems, particularly technical performance issues and controversial microtransactions that placed fast travel items and character edits behind paywalls. To address these concerns, Capcom rolled out a major update in June that removed those frustrating microtransactions, and another performance patch is scheduled for August to tackle frame rate stability and adjust the polarizing Dragonsplague mechanic.
These updates are laying the groundwork for the upcoming Dark Arisen expansion, which launches this October. Balancing modern quality-of-life demands with the franchise's signature hardcore identity is no small task for the team. Dragon's Dogma 2 originally drew both praise and frustration for its restrictive travel system, which limited portcrystals per playthrough and forced players to navigate dangerous open-world roads on foot or by cart.
While previous director Hideaki Itsuno famously defended the lack of instant travel as a way to make journeys engaging, the team is now finding a middle ground that respects player time while preserving the strategic choices that make the world feel dangerous and alive. As the August performance patch approaches, the developers hope to prove that the base game is finally in a state where players can happily return and dive into the new expansion without friction.
