Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Gets a Free Demo With Carry-Over Progress

A free demo for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined launches tomorrow with save data carrying over to the full game, offering a first look at the streamlined 3D remake ahead of its February release.

Square Enix is giving players an early look at one of the year's biggest classic revivals. A free playable demo for Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined drops tomorrow, letting fans jump into the opening hours of the adventure ahead of its full launch on February 5. Best of all, any progress you make in the demo carries straight over to the main game.

Originally released back in 2000 as Fragments of the Forgotten Past, this new version moves away from the recent HD-2D aesthetic in favor of a striking 3D diorama visual style with toy-like character models. Beyond the fresh coat of paint, the developers have modernized the gameplay loop in ways that fit contemporary player habits. You can now breeze past minor enemies on the overworld without transitioning into a full turn-based battle, speed up combat encounters, and experiment with dual vocations.

Crucially, the team focused heavily on cutting down the notorious bloat of the original release, which often demanded a hundred hours of your time, ensuring the pacing feels right for today's players. As reported by Polygon, producer Takeshi Ichikawa noted that streamlining the narrative was a primary goal for modern audiences. You can test out these quality-of-life upgrades yourself when the demo arrives on January 7 across Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
