Dragon Quest 11 S Headed to Nintendo Switch 2 With Performance Modes and Format Concerns

Dragon Quest 11 S is launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24 for $39.99, featuring a 60 FPS performance mode alongside a separate save file and controversial Game-Key Card physical format.
Square Enix is bringing Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition to the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24. Priced at $39.99 for both physical and digital editions, this release follows February's launch of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined to continue building out the JRPG library on Nintendo's new hardware. Players can choose between Graphics Mode and a 60 FPS Performance Mode running at 1080p, while the package also bundles in all previously released cosmetic DLC packs from the original port.
Despite the upgrade in frame rate and visual targets, the release comes with a few notable friction points for players. Square Enix is treating this as a completely separate standalone purchase rather than a discounted or free upgrade path for owners of the original Switch version. That means save data will not transfer over, requiring players to start their journey as the Luminary from scratch if they jump to the new system.
The physical release format is also drawing scrutiny from the community. Physical copies on the Switch 2 will utilize the platform's Game-Key Card format, requiring a hefty 23.4 GB of available storage space for installation. As digital ownership models and hybrid media formats continue to evolve across modern consoles, requirements like this highlight the ongoing debate around physical preservation versus convenience in current-gen gaming.
This release is part of a broader push for the franchise on Nintendo platforms, which includes the upcoming spin-off Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World arriving on December 3, alongside ongoing anticipation for Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams. While the Definitive Edition remains one of the finest modern Jargps available, the lack of an upgrade path and the reliance on Game-Key Cards mean players will have to weigh convenience against platform limitations before diving back into Erdrea.
