Double Fine Teases Brutal Legend 2 in New Kickstarter, With One Catch

Newly independent Double Fine has launched a Kickstarter campaign featuring a humorous $100 million stretch goal to finally make Brutal Legend 2, alongside a new round of experimental indie prototypes.
Double Fine is officially back on its own terms. Following its departure from Xbox earlier this summer alongside a major restructuring wave, the studio regained its complete independence and classic gameography. To celebrate this new chapter, the team has launched a crowdfunding campaign for Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot, inviting the community back into the chaotic prototype process that originally birthed favorites like Costume Quest and Iron Brigade.
Hidden inside the crowdfunding tier list is a massive, highly ambitious stretch goal. If the campaign somehow manages to hit a nearly impossible $100 million, Double Fine has promised to finally deliver Brutal Legend 2. As Eurogamer notes, this is almost certainly the studio leaning into its signature humor. The largest video game crowdfunding campaign in history, Shenmue 3, brought in roughly $6 million, making the $100 million target a towering mountain to climb.
While a Jack Black-fronted heavy metal sequel remains a distant dream, the actual crowdfunding project offers plenty of genuine excitement. Backers are currently voting on a wild slate of 26 pitches, ranging from Lesbian Sled Death to Brouroboros. The winning prototypes will be developed during a two-week game jam, with one selected to become a fully released title under the studio's new label for unconventional projects, Double Fine Action Labs.
