Nintendo and Illumination revealed a new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, featuring a surprise casting announcement that brings Donald Glover on board to voice Yoshi.
Nintendo and Illumination have dropped the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a recent Nintendo Direct, giving us a much broader look at the cosmic scope of this upcoming sequel. While the footage showed off plenty of new worlds and familiar faces expanding far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, the biggest headline belongs to the casting sheet. In a move that caught everyone off guard, Donald Glover is stepping into the shoes of Yoshi, taking over the role from veteran Nintendo composer and sound designer Kazumi Totaka. Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri noted that Glover came to the project as a genuine Nintendo super-fan.
Glover is not the only heavy hitter joining the franchise for this outing. Luis Guzmán is stepping in to voice the returning villain Wart, while Issa Rae is taking on the role of Honey Queen, the ruler of the Honeyhive Galaxy. They join a stacked returning cast that features Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black bringing his signature energy back as Bowser. We are also getting Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. to round out the new additions.
The sequel is shaping up to be a massive commercial play for Nintendo as they continue building out their cinematic universe across theaters and streaming channels. Fan favorites like Lumalee are also returning to dish out more nihilistic commentary, this time from a surprising new post as a prison guard. With the premiere locked in for April 1, the hype cycle is hitting full gear, and it will be fascinating to see how audiences respond to Glover voicing the iconic green dinosaur when the credits finally roll.
