DNX #1 Struggles to Justify Marvel's Latest Mutant Crossover Event

The debut issue of Marvel's DNX crossover struggles with heavy exposition and a forced Fantastic Four cameo, resulting in a plodding start for the X-Men franchise.

Marvel's mutants are back in the spotlight, but their latest crossover effort is hitting a wall right out of the gate. According to a recent review by IGN South Africa, the debut issue of DNX fails to recapture the creative momentum that fans enjoyed during the Krakoa era. Instead of diving straight into the action, the opening chapter gets heavily bogged down by exposition and recap, leaving readers with a painfully slow start while competing crossover events like Avengers: Armageddon already crowd the release calendar.

Beyond the pacing issues, the crossover premise itself feels somewhat forced. While writer Jed MacKay attempts to pit Cyclops against the villainous White Beast over a dystopian future where a virus mutates humanity, the inclusion of the Fantastic Four feels entirely superfluous. The iconic superhero family enters the fray through a minor subplot involving Magneto, but they fail to establish a natural reason for being there, making the book read more like a standard X-Men arc with guest stars shoehorned in for marketing weight.

Still, the issue finds some footing when it focuses squarely on the dysfunctional dynamics of the 3K villain cabal, where characters like Cassandra Nova and Joseph are forced into an inherently unstable alliance. Artist Federico Vicentini and colorist David Curiel also do heavy lifting to save the dialogue-heavy script, injecting vibrant colors and chaotic energy into the pages. While there is untapped potential in this superhero pairing, issue one leaves a lot of work to do if it wants to justify its place in Marvel's crowded publishing lineup.
