Polygon reports that Disney is reviving Darkwing Duck for a brand new Disney Plus series starring Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen, featuring a multiversal plot and returning classic villains.
Disney is diving back into its animation vault to revive a classic hero, as Polygon reports that Darkwing Duck is officially returning for a brand new series on Disney Plus. The show follows Drake Mallard as he spends 35 years trapped in an alternate dimension where nobody remembers his superhero career, until a rebellious teenager named Duckie pulls him back into the fight. Original creator Tad Stones consulted on the project, which promises a multiverse-spanning adventure for the iconic vigilante.
The voice cast brings together some heavy hitters from film and television, with Mark Hamill stepping into the role of Darkwing Duck and Seth Rogen voicing his trusty sidekick, Launchpad McQuack. They will be joined by Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn, Lilimar as Duckie, and a supporting lineup that includes Dan Stevens and Kathryn Newton. Classic adversaries like Negaduck and Megavolt are also confirmed to return, alongside familiar allies like Morgana.
While Darkwing previously made a brief comeback during the 2017 DuckTales reboot, this marks his first standalone series since the original show wrapped up its 91-episode run in 1992. The character has a long history with interactive entertainment, having starred in classic platformers on the NES and Game Boy back in the day. Disney has not yet announced an official premiere date for the new series, but fans on streaming platforms can revisit the original 1991 run on Disney Plus while they wait for that familiar cloud of blue smoke.
For today's cross-platform players and animation fans, this revival taps right into the ongoing wave of nostalgia that drives modern entertainment culture. Whether this new multi-dimensional setup leads to a companion tie-in game or digital collectibles down the line remains to be seen, but it gives millennial and Gen Z viewers another classic franchise to share across social feeds and streaming watch parties.
