Disney announced a new live-action and animation hybrid miniseries for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, arriving on Disney Plus in 2027 following the character's modern resurgence through the Epic Mickey series.
For anyone who fell in love with Disney's forgotten history through Junction Point's cult classic platformer, a long-awaited piece of redemption is finally on the way. During the recent D23 showcase, Disney announced a brand-new three-part miniseries titled Oswald, slated to hit Disney Plus on February 17, 2027. According to a report by Polygon, the project will be written, co-directed, and produced by Jon Favreau and will blend live-action with animation.
The cast includes notable names like Kathryn Hahn, Albert Brooks, and Ravi Cabot-Conyers, following a premise where Oswald escapes into the real world after an earthquake and befriends a group of middle school kids. This marks a major milestone for the character, whose modern resurgence began back in 2006 when Disney traded sports broadcaster Al Michaels to NBCUniversal to reacquire the rights. That corporate trade paved the way for Oswald's star turn alongside Mickey Mouse in 2010's Epic Mickey on the Nintendo Wii.
While the character has made a few brief appearances since then, including the 2024 remaster, he has mostly remained sidelined outside of gaming spaces. For cross-platform players, the timing is especially interesting as Epic Mickey Rebrushed continues its rollout with upcoming ports to iOS and Android on September 16, followed by the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 6. It is a win for gaming history enthusiasts who remember when interactive media was the primary place keeping forgotten media franchises alive.
