Disney Explains Why Upcoming Animated Film Hexed Swapped Its Lead Character

Directors Jason Hand and Fawn Veerasunthorn detail why Disney shifted Hexed from a mother and son story to a mother and daughter magical adventure ahead of its November release.
When Disney first previewed Hexed at the D23 fan event in 2025, the studio pitched the magical project as an awkward teenage boy discovering hidden powers alongside his mother. By the time the teaser trailer dropped in June, that dynamic had shifted to follow a teenage girl instead. Speaking at the Annecy Festival, directors Jason Hand and Fawn Veerasunthorn explained that while the parent and child core remained constant from day one, shifting the focus to a mother and daughter unlocked a much stronger emotional angle for the film.
According to the creative team, this specific familial bond lent itself better to themes of empowerment and witchcraft. The final film, slated for a November 25 theatrical release, follows a rebellious teen named Billie, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, whose magical abilities awaken after a protective bracelet made by her mother, Alice, played by Rashida Jones, falls off. While comparisons to classic hero journeys and magical academies are inevitable, the directors emphasize that the secret ingredient of the narrative is the collaborative dynamic between mother and daughter rather than a lone protagonist tackling destiny on their own.
For modern audiences navigating crowded slates of animated releases across theaters and streaming services, finding fresh perspectives within familiar fantasy tropes is always a welcome sight. By centering the plot on uncovering the hidden past, youthful mistakes, and suppressed power of a mother, Hexed aims to carve out a unique space distinct from past Disney hits like Moana or Encanto.
