Discord Rolls Out SDK Updates and Guardrails After Arc Raiders Bug Exposed Private Messages

Discord and Embark Studios have addressed a security flaw in Arc Raiders that stored local chat logs on player PCs, prompting new SDK protections from Discord.
Data privacy is a foundational pillar for any platform where millions of players hang out daily, but a recent security slip on PC has put that reality into sharp focus. Security researcher Timothy Meadows discovered that the Discord integration for Embark Studios' extraction shooter Arc Raiders was inadvertently storing users' private Discord messages locally on their machines. The issue stemmed from debugging features built into the Discord Social SDK, which generated detailed local logs when developers used high logging levels for testing. While the logs required direct access to the local device or files to view, security experts noted those files could have potentially been swept up in automated bug reports or accessed by other background applications.
Embark Studios moved quickly to deploy a hotfix once the problem came to light, cutting off the vulnerable logging behavior for Arc Raiders players. Meanwhile, Discord issued a formal statement to Eurogamer explaining that the issue specifically impacted players who linked their Discord accounts to the game via the integration. To prevent similar incidents across the ecosystem, Discord is currently updating its Social SDK with extra safety protections, revising developer guidance, and reaching out directly to studio partners currently building or maintaining social integrations.
For a community that relies on Discord as the central hub for voice comms, LFG groups, and social circles, any slip in data handling is naturally unsettling. While the immediate danger has been patched out, safety advocates and security researchers still recommend that anyone who used the integration change their account passwords and disconnect the feature as an extra precaution. As modern games lean harder into cross-platform social features and deep platform integrations, this episode serves as a clear reminder that developers and platform holders must maintain strict oversight over how local log data is handled.
