Discord Rolls Out New Age Verification System With Alternative Options to Biometric Scans

Discord is launching its global age verification system with non-biometric options following earlier community pushback over privacy concerns.

Discord is rolling out its controversial age verification system globally after facing intense community backlash earlier this year. Initially, the platform planned to restrict sensitive content and require government IDs or facial scans for anyone who could not automatically prove they were an adult, which naturally sparked major privacy concerns among users who treat the app as their primary daily social hub. According to Eurogamer reporting, co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy addressed these worries in a new blog post, stating that the updated rollout aims to use the most privacy-preserving approach possible while complying with expanding international regulations.

The newly deployed system will automatically determine a user's age based on account history and server participation rather than scanning personal messages or calls. For accounts that fall into the adult category, the experience remains unchanged, while accounts flagged as teens receive automated safety protections for restricted content and spaces. If an adult user is incorrectly sorted into the teen bracket, the platform now provides non-biometric alternatives to confirm age, such as credit card verification or sharing age ratings through mobile app stores instead of submitting sensitive identification documents.

While digital platform regulations continue to tighten across various regions and countries, Discord is choosing to implement these guardrails globally to stay ahead of stricter legislation. The company maintains that all data submitted for verification is strictly used to determine age groups, giving communities a clearer path forward as online spaces adapt to new compliance standards.
