Discord Finally Fixes an Unpopular Downgrade by Boosting Free Upload Limits

Discord has increased its free file upload limit to 20MB, partially reversing an unpopular downgrade made back in 2024.
Discord has rolled out a fresh update that brings a welcome relief for standard users, raising the platform upload file size limit back up to 20MB. According to Sarah Fields reporting for Game Rant, free users can now share larger files immediately without needing to upgrade to a paid subscription. This change effectively reverses part of an unpopular downgrade from 2024, when Discord slashed the free limit down to 10MB due to rising infrastructure and hosting costs.
While the new 20MB cap does not quite reach the old peak of 25MB from years prior, it is a significant step up that makes daily sharing on the app much smoother for players who prefer to keep their wallets closed. Paid tiers remain untouched by this specific adjustment, meaning Nitro Basic subscribers keep their 50MB limit and full Nitro users retain their hefty 500MB capability. Even so, easing restrictions on the base tier shows that platform management is listening to community feedback, especially as the app continues to serve as the digital home base for cross-platform gaming groups, stream viewers, and community hangouts.
