At San Diego Comic Con, the creative team behind the upcoming Avatar Aang film discussed early concept leaks, design iterations, and the deliberate choice to stick with traditional 2D animation.
During a panel at San Diego Comic Con, director Lauren Montgomery addressed the inevitable reality of early asset leaks while discussing the upcoming animated feature, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. Reflecting on a 2024 CinemaCon incident where an early production image found its way online, Montgomery shared how the production team ultimately leaned into the chaos. When studio assurances that materials were secure fell flat, production designer Jake Panian used the warning window to completely repaint the artwork. Despite being captured via cell phone footage from an awkward angle, that revised image eventually became a defining visual pillar for the promotional campaign.
Beyond the rollout hiccups, the panel offered a deep dive into the creative iterations behind the aged up Team Avatar. Montgomery walked audiences through early concept iterations, including an alternate take on Aang with a chinstrap beard, multiple hairstyle variations for Zuko, and a conceptual direction for Katara that the team eventually pivoted away from. These early explorations heavily influenced the final aesthetic, giving the creative team a solid foundation while they worked to preserve traditional animation techniques.
Co creator Bryan Konietzko also shed light on the medium choice for the project, admitting the team initially considered contemporary stylized 3D pipelines popularized by hits like Spider-Verse and Arcane. However, a realization struck the creators that the project needed to honor its roots as a love letter to Japanese anime. That realization solidified the decision to keep the feature strictly 2D and hand drawn, ensuring the theatrical outing respects the visual identity fans fell in love with years ago.
