Original Blizzard North developers have announced Darkhaven, an isometric action RPG that swaps minor stat upgrades for bold loot and fully destructible, reactive environments.
A team of original Blizzard North developers has pulled back the curtain on Darkhaven, a dark fantasy action RPG aiming to recapture the spirit of classic dungeon crawlers while modernizing the genre. Founded by Diablo 1 and 2 veterans Philip Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer, Moon Beast Productions is building an isometric world that moves away from predictable stat ladders. According to reporting by Edwin Evans-Thirlwell at Rock Paper Shotgun, the project features a fully dynamic, procedurally generated environment where players can tunnel through dungeon walls, drain lakes, and even redirect lava flows to reshape the battlefield.
Instead of relying on the predictable treadmill of tiny percentage upgrades common in modern live-service titles, the developers are promising expressive loot items designed to completely redefine character builds. Combat also incorporates active movement mechanics like jumping, climbing, and dashing, shifting the focus toward player skill and terrain awareness rather than pure gear scores. The world itself reacts to your actions, featuring changing seasons, persistent weather, and a history that remembers major victories and failures across solo, cooperative, and PvP-enabled realms.
While the pedigree behind the project is undeniable, players should keep a healthy dose of skepticism regarding its rollout. The studio is currently funding the game through Kickstarter ahead of a planned Steam Early Access launch. Crowdfunding carries inherent risks in the current gaming landscape, but for fans tired of incremental progression and corporate live-service loops, Darkhaven offers an intriguing alternative backed by developers who helped define the genre in the first place.
