Destiny Goes Mobile: Alternate Timelines and Pocket-Sized Mayhem Coming This August

Bungie's shrinking Destiny down for mobile with *Destiny: Rising*, an alternate-timeline adventure launching this August, and it's looking to bring all the looter-shooter goodness to your pocket.

Right, so Destiny's been kicking around for ages, hasn't it? Well, Bungie's decided we need *more* Destiny in our lives, only this time, it's shrunk down and crammed onto our phones. *Destiny: Rising*, the free-to-play mobile spin-off, is officially dropping on iOS and Android on August 28th. Sounds like a fair bit of alright, eh?

Now, before you start muttering about microtransactions and touchscreen controls, let's have a gander at what this is all about. Announced last October and cooked up in cahoots with NetEase (those lovely folks over in China), *Destiny: Rising* isn't just a straight-up port. Instead, it's billed as a "shared world" adventure set in an "alternate Destiny timeline, exploring a narrative in the post-Dark Age era." Alternate timelines, eh? Anyone else getting some serious "what if...?" vibes? I reckon this might be a bit more interesting than a reskinned Destiny 2 experience.

After some closed alpha testing – you know, the kind where a select few get to poke around and break things before the rest of us do – *Destiny: Rising* is nearly ready for prime time. You'll be stepping into the boots of a "fully customisable" Lightbearer called Wolf, gallivanting across various locales, from Haven to Jiangshi (an "icy, ancient metro," no less!), and the Red Sea Rift. Sounds like a proper jaunt, doesn't it?

But what about the gameplay, you ask? Fear not, the core looter-shooter action is apparently still there. We're talking single-player shenanigans, co-op capers, competitive multiplayer mayhem, open-world objectives, missions, strikes, PvP battles, and even six-player PvE activities. Blimey! And there's a shedload of gear to get your mitts on, including customisable Primary and Power Weapons, the ability to share compatible weapons (finally!), and a fancy new Mythic rarity tier.

Of course, no mobile game is complete without a pre-registration event. NetEase is dangling some in-game bonuses for anyone who signs up ahead of the launch. Head over to the Google Play Store or the App Store if you're keen to get a head start. (Just don't say I didn't warn you about the potential for future in-app purchases...)

Oh, and in case you're still stuck on the big-screen Destiny, Bungie's got some plans for *Destiny 2*, too. The next major story arc, the Fate Saga, is kicking off with *The Edge of Fate* expansion (out July 15th). Plus, there's *Renegades* launching on December 2nd, with a Star Wars theme! (Someone call Disney!). So, plenty of Destiny to go around, no matter your platform of choice.

So, are you ready to dive into an alternate timeline and blast some baddies on your phone? I, for one, am cautiously optimistic. It could be brilliant, or it could be a bit of a disaster. Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: it'll be interesting to watch.
