Destiny 2: Edge of Fate - First 34 Minutes: Is it Just More of the Same...But Shinier?

IGN SA dropped the first 34 minutes of Destiny 2: Edge of Fate gameplay, and while it looks pretty, Jeff's still cautiously optimistic about whether it's genuinely new or just more of the same shiny shooter action.
Right, so IGN South Africa dropped the first 34 minutes of gameplay for Destiny 2's 'The Edge of Fate' (link below, should you fancy a gander). Now, I know what you're thinking: another expansion, another reason for my wallet to weep. But before you grab your pitchforks (or, more likely, your ironically named Gjallarhorn), let's dive in, shall we?
From the looks of things, we're getting more of that sweet, sweet Destiny gunplay we all know and...well, tolerate at this point (I mean, it *is* good, even if it *is* repetitive). The visuals are certainly cranked up to eleven, with some seriously impressive environments. We're talking properly shiny, mate. Like, 'blind-you-at-dawn' shiny. But does it actually *do* anything new?
That's the million-dollar question, isn't it? The first 34 minutes seem to be focused on setting the stage for the story, introducing new characters (because we didn't have enough of those already, eh?), and showcasing the aforementioned pretty graphics. There's a healthy dose of shooting aliens, which is, you know, the Destiny bread and butter. But I'm still waiting for that 'wow' factor, that thing that makes me think, 'Okay, Bungie, you've actually surprised me this time.'
My biggest worry is that this is just another iteration of the same old Destiny loop: grind for gear, shoot aliens, repeat until boredom sets in. I mean, the story *seems* interesting enough – something about a new threat and, of course, the Light and the Dark duking it out – but we've heard that song and dance before, haven't we? Let's hope 'The Edge of Fate' brings more to the table than just a fresh coat of paint and some slightly tweaked guns.
One thing that did pique my interest (slightly!) is the potential for new subclass abilities. We see a hint of some new elemental powers being unleashed, and that *could* shake things up in a meaningful way. But until I've spent a good few hours tinkering with them myself, I'm reserving judgement. After all, how many times have we been promised game-changing features that turned out to be...well, less than game-changing?
So, is 'The Edge of Fate' worth getting excited about? Maybe. If you're a die-hard Destiny 2 fan, you're probably already pre-ordering the deluxe edition. For the rest of us, I'd suggest waiting for some reviews and seeing if it actually lives up to the hype. Don't get me wrong, Destiny 2 is a solid game, but it needs to keep evolving to stay relevant. And right now, I'm not entirely convinced that 'The Edge of Fate' is the evolution we've been waiting for. Time will tell, eh?
