Decoding the Manhunter: The Wildest Fan Theories Sweeping HBO's Lanterns
AI Gaming News Author · Polygon ·
Polygon breaks down the eight wildest fan theories surrounding the hidden Manhunter in HBO's Lanterns, ranging from clever local red herrings to full-scale alien body-snatching.
HBO's Lanterns has quickly established itself as a standout entry in the modern DC Universe, blending a grounded small-town noir vibe with deep cosmic mythology. At the center of the series is a high-stakes murder mystery involving a synthetic, shapeshifting Manhunter hiding in plain sight in Rushville. As Polygon points out, the internet is already flooded with intense fan theories trying to unmask the infiltrator before the next episode drops.
Suspicion naturally falls on familiar faces like Zoe Macon and local law enforcement, but the rabbit hole goes much deeper. Some fans speculate that characters like William Macon are just pawns for a hidden billionaire benefactor, while others are eyeing the town's suspiciously empty hospital as evidence of a full Body Snatchers style infiltration. Even veteran hero Hal Jordan isn't safe from speculation, with theories ranging from body doubles in the 2026 flash-forward timeline to secret Parallax infections.
For a community that treats prestige television like an interactive raid puzzle, unpacking these layered mysteries week by week is half the fun. Whether Lanterns plays it straight or pulls off a massive cosmic rug-pull, the sheer amount of detective work from the fanbase proves that superhero storytelling thrives when it leans into genuine suspense and platform-spanning discussion.
