Death Stranding movie director Michael Sarnoski has given an update on the A24 adaptation, confirming that the script is nearly finished and hinting at possible game character cameos.
The upcoming live action adaptation of Death Stranding is steadily moving forward at A24. In a recent interview at IGN Live 2026, reported by Eurogamer, writer and director Michael Sarnoski shared that he is nearing the finish line on the script. Sarnoski noted that Hideo Kojima has already reviewed a draft and provided feedback, leading to a collaborative revision process that has everyone involved feeling positive about the direction of the project.
Sarnoski previously emphasized that the film will carve out its own distinct space within the universe. Instead of directly retelling the events of the first game, the movie aims to tell a self contained story featuring original characters and a fresh narrative corner of the world. This approach mirrors the strategy behind other successful game adaptations like the Fallout television series, which prioritized building out the universe rather than simply checking off canon plot points.
At the same time, fans do not need to worry about the film completely disconnecting from the source material. Sarnoski teased that viewers might see some familiar characters from the games pop up in the adaptation. Given how heavily Hideo Kojima populates his worlds with recognizable actors and industry colleagues using their real likenesses, integrating familiar faces into a cinematic story should feel like a natural nod to the player community.
