Kojima Productions announced that the upcoming 2D animated series Death Stranding Isolations will stream exclusively on Disney Plus in 2027, expanding the franchise into traditional animation alongside an upcoming A24 film.
Kojima Productions has officially confirmed that the upcoming Death Stranding anime series will stream exclusively on Disney Plus when it launches in 2027. Originally teased by Hideo Kojima earlier this year, the project is currently titled Death Stranding Isolations. Kojima is attached as executive producer, while Takayuki Sano is set to direct the series at animation studio E&H production. Concept art for the project has already been revealed, courtesy of Ghost in the Shell character designer Ilya Kuvshinov.
The series will feature a traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation style rather than leaning into the CGI trends currently dominating many game adaptations. According to the official synopsis shared by Kojima Productions, the story unfolds parallel to the main games. It follows a fresh cast of characters navigating the desolate, post apocalyptic landscape of North America, including a cynical old man, a warrior obsessed with combat, a vengeful boy, and a girl who finds comfort in isolation, all while legendary porters attempt to reconnect the remnants of human civilization.
While fans are eager to see how Kojima's intricate universe translates to traditional animation, the choice of distribution platform has already sparked debate within the community. Locking the series behind a Disney Plus subscription means another separate streaming fee for viewers who already juggle multiple gaming subscriptions and entertainment services. Even so, with a separate live action film adaptation also in the works through a partnership with A24, Kojima Productions is clearly expanding its footprint far beyond traditional console hardware.
